The Corps of Discovery was one of President Thomas Jefferson’s most memorable experiments. The 8,000-mile trek by boat, foot, and horses of his carefully chosen co-captains, Lewis and Clark, revealed a marvelous new world to the colonists that resonates even today. This brief review of events leading up to the 1804-1806 journey of roughly 30 men and a squaw is an introduction to the pioneer history of the West that will continue beyond the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. We will travel to at least some of the memorable waypoints of those hardy explorers, and hopefully in the spirit of the inquiring mind of Mr. Jefferson himself. I will drive this week 2024 to St. Louis via the Ohio and then travel along the Missouri River as best way possible to roughly trace the route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Future blogs will reflect some of the scenery and developments on their journey.
