Meriwether Lewis finally gets his initial skeleton crew of Corps of Discovery underway from Pittsburgh. Low water in August and September (1883) tests keelboat and men as they pass along the Ohio River past Moundsville, Marietta, Blennerhassett Island, Parkersburg, Cincinnati and the future village of Rising Sun (near Big Bone Lick). They are headed for a rendezvous with co-captain William Clark near Louisville (October 14).
